Reading aloud is one of the most important and effective ways an adult can help a child develop his or her language skills. By simply reading a book aloud as a child listens and reads along, an adult builds a deep connection with the child and demonstrates that reading is special and worth our time. Reading aloud is, on many levels, fundamental to a child’s intellectual growth and emotional health. • The text introduces children to the vocabulary included in the Engage Literacy student books Levels 1 to 3. • When reading Min Monkey and Little Lemur to children, use more than just your voice. Use facial gestures and body movements as well. Experiment with exaggerated gestures and movements until you find the level of drama that elicits the best reaction from your audience. • Before reading the story, ask the children if they know what a jungle is. Discuss the difference between a jungle and a rain forest (Answer: A rain forest has a green canopy that blocks sunlight and limits plant growth on the ground.) Say: “Look at the pictures in the story. Does it look like Little Lemur and Min live in a jungle or a rain forest?” • Designate a small group of children to say the word “zip” when it appears in the story. Do the same with other action words like, “flit,” “hop,”“splash.” • Ask: “In what ways are Little Lemur and Min the same?”(long tail, big ears) “In what ways are they different?” (color, different eyes) • Explain what “monkey see, monkey do” means. Have children face a partner and mimic each other’s facial expressions. Encourage exaggeration. • Little Lemur has a striped tail. Encourage the children to think of any other animals with striped tails.
